Frank Shepherd worked at variety of jobs before volunteering for service in 1945

Throughout his life, Carter County native Frank Shepherd has worn many different hats. From his time in the rail yards of Chicago to his time as a teacher in Carter County, Shepherd has accumulated a lifetime of different experiences.

Frank Shepherd shows a picture of himself when just a young soldier at the age of 18. Shepherd entered the military upon his graduation from high school in 1945.

Before his birth, Shepherd’s parents — William and Hazel — left Carter County when his father took a job with the Illinois Central Railroad. Prior to the Shepherds’ relocation to the Midwest, he said his father worked for Clinchfield Railroad. “Right before I was born, my mother returned to Carter County to give birth to me. After staying here for two weeks, we returned to Chicago where I grew up,” Shepherd recalled.
