Freestyle nationals await local female wrestlers

By

Off-season prep wrestling for teenage girls is suddenly a hot commodity at Elizabethton High School.
That’s thanks in a large part to former Pigeon Forge coach Eddie Morrell, a native of this city. Morrell has returned with his two daughters, and along with three-time Tennessee state champion Clarissa Ceffalo, the Lady Cyclones are riding high headed to a major competition next week.
“Women’s freestyle wrestling is the fastest growing sanctioned sport,” Morrell, coach of the Tennessee national women’s freestyle wrestling team, said before Thursday’s practice. “It has been an Olympic sport since the Bejiing Games (2008). Women have been allowed to wrestle freestyle, and currently there are about eleven thousand women wrestling in the United States.
