Cloudland didn’t have to search long and hard for a new boys’ head basketball coach to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Brandon Carpenter. The answer was only one chair down, according to school Principal Randy Birchfield.
Gary Harrison, who has served as an assistant coach for the past three seasons, will take over the reins for the 2013-14 season. Before that he spent four years as the Junior High head basketball coach.
Harrison was a standout player on the hardwood for the Highlanders during his playing days starring under Birchfield, who was coach at the time. He expressed his appreciation for being selected and agreed that this was something that he has always wanted to do.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity,” Harrison said. “I’ve seen Cloudland basketball all my life – through the highs and lows. I believe we have a good structure with what we do now and that won’t change. Our trademark has always been hard work and defensive pressure and that won’t change. We feel good about the athletes we have returning even though we lost a lot of good players from last year.”
