During race weekends, it’s not uncommon for roads and parking lots to fill as fans pour in to see the action.
According to Elizabethton Municipal Airport Manager Dan Cogan, it’s not uncommon for the skies to fill up, too.
“We’ve seen a lot of race traffic,” Cogan said. “It’s been really busy.”
Although the Bristol race has temporarily increased the level of business at the airport, a boost from the state could yield additional business in the future.
On Aug. 20, the Tennessee Department of Transportation awarded $1,670,670 in grant money for the acquisition of additional land for the airport’s runway protection zone.
The grant requires a local match of $87,930.
