Cloudland fans were expecting a heavy snow to hit Roan Mountain sometime during the boys’ game. What the Highlanders didn’t expect was for Hampton to hit them with a heavy knockout punch to start the third quarter.
The No. 4 Bulldogs reeled off 17 consecutive points after halftime, leading to an impressive 84-45 victory inside a jammed-packed Sonny Smith Gymnasium. Yet the game was close in the early going.
The Highlanders led 13-11 after one and it was tied at 17 all with 5:40 remaining in the second quarter. But a steal and layup from Tyler Moody helped trigger a 14-3 run to close the half. Hampton’s halftime lead of 31-20 had ballooned to 48-20 before reaching the midway point of the third quarter.
