Highway Committee focuses on road safety

Lights, signs, safety and more lights held sway at the Carter County Highway Committee Monday.

Commissioner Joel Street updated the committee on safety projects initiated a few years ago through the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Four flashing warning signs have been placed in the areas of Tiger Creek and Simerly Creek along U.S. Highway 19E.

“There has been an estimate of about 20 tractor-trailers roll over on one curve,” Street said. “I have actually in my lifetime seen two flip over there. There have also been several accidents at the other curve.”

Hopefully, Street said, the signs will improve safety for locals, as well as out-of-town truck drivers and motorists.

“A yellow caution light means prepare to stop,” he said. “Hopefully this will save a life and that’s what it is all about.”
