Historic Zoning group denies Confederate marker at Monument

David Ornduff cast the only vote in favor of the Confederate marker at the Monument. He said the marker would allow for future generations to appreciate all aspects of local history.

A Confederate marker will not be added to the area surrounding the 99-year-old Veterans Monument that stands guard to the entrance of downtown Elizabethton after the Elizabethton Historic Zoning Commission voted to deny a request to add a smaller marker in memory of Confederate veterans from Carter County. The commission voted 6-1 to deny the request. Jaycee Augustus, Jennifer Birchfield, Charles LaPorte, David Pinckard, Helen Wilson and Chairman Sarah Baker voted to deny the marker while David Ornduff voted against the denial.
