Recording four wins by way of pinfall, five via weight class forfeits and holding Elizabethton to 13 points in additional head-to-head competition, Happy Valley made good on a social media guarantee with a 53-25 decision over rival Elizabethton during an in-school bout Thursday at Bayless Gymnasium.
The Cyclones, whio had an advantage in two weight classes yet yielded 30 points in five others, would have needed a number of pinfall victories to steal away the overall outcome. However, the Warriors, which promised a win via its athletics Twitter feed Wednesday, did enough work on the mat to prevent a spoiler.
“What we saw today was a vast improvement against the same team from a week ago,” said Happy Valley coach Eddie Morrell. “We barely won last time, 42-39, and forfeits played a big role in it. Today we had a couple of pins we weren’t expecting, had a couple of close matches we weren’t expecting and came out on the better end of it. It’s a growing process for the team and I couldn’t be happier with where they are.”
