Jail pods go up for auction next week

By

Eight years ago, five double-wide modular units were carefully installed on the northside of the Carter County Jail in an effort to temporarily ease overcrowding. Next week, those five jail pods, which the county originally purchased for $1 million, will be going up for auction.

In this photo taken in January 2005, a contractor lowered one of the pods at the Carter County Jail. The county purchased five pods from Eagle Modular. The pods will go up for auction next week, and the winning buyer will be responsible for removing the units.

Carter County Finance Director Ingrid Deloach said the pods will be placed on Proxibid, an online auction website, by the Royston Auction Company of Elizabethton. Bidding in the absolute auction, which means there is no set reserve or minimum purchase price, will open on Monday, July 30, and close on Friday, Aug. 3.
