Although Carter County saw plenty of change in 2012, some stories stood out.
One of the most-discussed stories of the year concerned the construction and opening of the Carter County Jail.
After nearly a decade of discussion, design, and construction, the sheriff’s department prepared to movie into the jail in the spring of 2012.
What county officials referred to as construction errors and design flaws kept the sheriff’s department busy for the next several months. The facility was opened for a tour in mid-June, and county officials walked side-by-side with the general public to see what their tax dollars had wrought. What they saw included numerous issues, such as cracked floors, leaky faucets, and a wall partially covering an in-wall freezer’s control panel.
The prisoners were transferred from the old jail to the new in late June. Even after that, a range of issues continued to plague the jail.
