Johnson County ends Hampton’s win streak at 19 games

Two gladiator-like opponents gave high school basketball fans a game to remember inside a jam-packed Ray Shoun “Arena” on Monday.

Johnson County stunned No. 2-ranked Hampton 64-61 behind a 30-point effort from Brian Dempsey. It was a game in which 14 lead changes occurred.

Hampton (20-3), which brought a 19-game winning streak to Mountain City, held a slim 54-53 lead with 4:50 remaining, then the tide turned. Dempsey worked the paint for a runner and followed that up with a three-point play to put the ’Horns (13-9) in front to stay at 58-55.
