Jonesborough to kick off holidays with tree lighting

By

Historic Jonesborough’s holiday season will officially kick off with the annual Lighting of the Tree Saturday, Nov. 24, at 6 p.m. The large Fraser fir, located at Courthouse Square in downtown, will be ceremoniously lit and lead Jonesborough into the Christmas season. Old Saint Nick will also be in attendance in his sleigh for pictures and visits with children.

Musical entertainment will be provided by the Madrigal Singers from David Crockett High School and a Christmas Story will be told by local storyteller Marjorie Schaefer.

Other events taking place Saturday include Dickens Downtown from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. where Jonesborough will take you back in time to rekindle the old-fashioned Christmas spirit, Charles Dickens style. With carolers in period dress and horse-drawn sleigh rides (for a minimal charge) you will be taken to Christmases past.

Saturday will also see the return of Cash Mobs at 11 a.m. at the Jonesborough General Store. You may also enjoy free gift wrapping on any purchases made in Downtown Jonesborough at the Storytelling Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
