Three generations of Brewers perform together during their recent attendance at a family reunion at Roan Mountain State Park. From left: Gary Brewer jams with his sons, Mason and Wayne, and his father, Finley J. Brewer Jr. As a teenager, Gary Brewer formed his own band, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers. His grandfather, the late Finley J. Brewer Sr., performed for more than 80 years and even played during the 1920s with the original Carter family in Roan Mountain and in Newland, N.C.
When the Brewer family gathers for its annual reunion each summer, the event is always sure to feature plenty of pickin’ and singin’ by a family boasting a rich musical heritage stretching back for generations.
Gary Brewer, who heads up Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers, spoke to the Elizabethton STAR by phone while traveling from Kentucky to attend the reunion held at Roan Mountain State Park on Saturday, July 28.
Brewer noted that his family’s history is focused in the Shell Creek community of Roan Mountain.
