Junior guard Dorothy Dugger canned three of four from long range in the first period alone to help Hampton to victory. Dugger connected on five of nine from three-point land in scoring a gam- high 17 points.
Sophomore post Paige Montgomery added 14 points and seven rebounds as the Lady Bulldogs proved they could score inside, outside or any which way you like.
Sullivan Central stayed with Hampton early, trailing by 19-13 but having survived the three-point blitz from Dugger. However, the Lady ’Dogs kept up the defensive pressure and went into the dressing room with a 33-16 lead.
“We got off to a slow start defensively,” said Lady Bulldogs head coach Leon Tolley. “But we shot the ball so well it gave us time to let our defense kick in. That seemed to just jump start the rest of the team.”
The second half saw Hampton (7-2) work the ball inside on backdoor cuts to Montgomery that Central never seemed to recognize defensively until it was too late.
“Early on we ran with them,” said Central head coach Gary Surcey. “Then they went to that 1-3-1 half court trap and that changed the tempo of the game. Once they had the lead by three, then six, then nine my girls started to get discouraged and we forced a lot of shots. We didn’t shoot the ball with much confidence.”
Senior post Haley Trusler scored six points and Monica Olvera added five for the Bulldogs along with seven rebounds.
For Central, Brittany Hyder scored 15 points and had a game-high eight rebounds. Madi Phillipie tallied eight, but left the game late with foul trouble.
