KNOXVILLE — Their defense broke down at the start of the third quarter, but Hampton’s Leon Tolley lit a fire in his team from the bench. After watching a 15-point lead wither down to four, somebody had to step up for the Lady Bulldogs.
That somebody was Kim Swearingen.
“My coach knows me and my team,” Swearingen said. “He has to get on us to get us to do something. He got on me pretty good. I decided I needed to step up because Dorothy (Dugger) was out and (Kaitlin Irick) got hurt the last game.”
Swearingen broke Grace Christian’s momentum with eight straight third-quarter points, and Hampton closed the game with a 21-5 run over the final 13 minutes to knock off the Region 2-A Lady Rams and punch its ticket to the TSSAA Class A State tournament with a 45-25 road victory Saturday night.
