With the Unaka Lady Rangers zone defense extending almost back to Stoney Creek to hold down Hampton sharpshooters Dorothy Dugger and Monica Olvera, senior post Paige Montgomery made the Rangers pay in the paint.
Montgomery scored a game-high 17 points — 13 in first half — and sophomore guard Alexis Bowers’ strong second half enabled Hampton to hold off Unaka 58-47 on Friday night at VanHuss-White Gym.
“Unaka was overplaying our guards,” said Lady Bulldogs head coach Leon Tolley. “Our guards did a good job of getting the ball to Paige inside. That’s a welcome sight, we have been kind of waiting on that.
“Unaka had a great game plan coming in and we had to make quite a few adjustments to slow them down and just to stay a point or two ahead until we could go on a run.”
