Lady Cyclones split pair in NFS tournament pool play

By

ERWIN — Challenged by a disappointing loss, Elizabethton responded with its bats.

The Lady Cyclones tallied 16 hits in a 14-7 win over Dobyns-Bennett in the second game of pool play at the NFS softball tournament at Kiwanis Park.

Emily Thorton picked up the win on the mound for the Lady Cyclones, while seven of her teammates tallied a multiple-hit performance at the plate in response to a 5-4 game one loss to Cherokee, which took advantage of costly errors in the final frame.

“We played great,” said Elizabethton coach LeAnne Click. “We mixed it up a little bit in this game and threw Emily Thorton. She did a good job. We kind of relaxed and had a good time. They hit the ball really well in both games. I’m real proud of them. They really stepped it up.”

Ashleigh Dykes was 3-for-3 at the plate to lead Elizabethton, including two doubles with two RBI and three runs scored.

Reazyn DeMoss was 2-for-4, including a two-run homer in the fourth and an RBI double in the second. Caley Hodge was 2-for-2 with four runs scored, Lindsey Cunningham scored once and drove two across on a 2-for-4 day, while Danielle Loving was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run.

Sophie Bremer and Whitney Guinn scored a run with 2-for-3 outings and Summer Reece added an RBI single to cap the Lady Cyclones’ offensive efforts.

Elizabethton jumped out to a 2-0 lead, then scored seven runs with a eight-hit third inning for a 9-1 edge. Dobyns-Bennett cut the lead to five with a three-run blast from Samantha Lilley, who was 2-for-3 with five RBI on the night, but DeMoss’ homer in the fourth swung the momentum back to Elizabethton.

Five runs over the final two offensive frames led to a 14-4 lead, giving D-B one final opportunity at the plate.

The Lady Indians scored three in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn’t enough as time expired.

Elizabethton……………………………………….4

With the game tied at three apiece entering the sixth inning, Elizabethton starting pitcher Cunningham gave her team the boost it needed with a solo home run to take a 4-3 lead.

Costly mistakes in the field were the window of opportunity for the Lady Chiefs in its final at-bat. Lindsee Price and Pattie Taylor delivered consecutive singles, then mistakes in the field allowed the two runs to score and spoil another potential win for the Lady Cyclones in Erwin.

“It was kind of like our Unicoi game,” said Click. “It was down to whoever had the last at-bat and they got some on and scored.

“We hit really well and Lindsey pitched a good game, but we made a few errors here and there and that’s what hurt us. It was one of those back-and-forth games.”

Price took the win on the mound for Cherokee, who was out-hit 9-4 by the Lady Cyclones. Cunningham was on-point for Elizabethton despite the loss on the mound as the team was plagued by six errors in the field. She added a 3-for-3 effort at the plate scoring twice including the homer, with a double.

DeMoss had an RBI single in the first inning, scoring Bremer who reached with a hit. DeMoss crossed the plate on a two-run homer from Loving to give Elizabethton a 3-0 lead.

Cherokee made it a one-run game with two runs in the first and tied it behind an RBI single from Taylor in the third.

Elizabethton was slated to face Unaka in the third pool game Saturday morning.
