The competition was about as stiff as a frozen cottonball, and Elizabethton was up and down like a roller coaster over the three-day period.
The Cyclones had lost a heartbreaking 48-46 game to Doorman High School during the first round of the Upward Basketball tournament played in Spartanburg, S.C.
Some Cyclone followers that made the trip felt like they got robbed down the stretch. Legendary coach Len Dugger showed class like he always has since he broke into coaching in 1973 when asked about the officiating.
“It’s a lot different there than it is here,” said Dugger. “That’s to be expected when you you’re an out of state team playing the host team in the first round. I didn’t agree with several (calls), but we still had a chance to win the basketball game.”
Dugger’s squad couldn’t bounce back after the Doorman loss, falling to Fayette County 41-28. No Lady Cyclone reached double figures, although Whitney Roberts finished with nine.
The sign of a good team can be measured in their ability to bounce back.
Elizabethton did just that, defeating a very good Spartanburg High team 55-53.
