ERWIN — Cloudland’s girls bounced back in impression fashion at the Devils Den.
An evening after getting knocked off to derail a dominant season thus far, the Lady Highlanders pounded Unicoi County 64-53 on Saturday night in non-conference basketball action.
“I thought we were focused early, coming off a tough conference loss last night,” Cloudland coach Matt Birchfield said. “Good attitudes, good enthusiasm — I thought intense. We made some buckets we had to, and then got the game off on a good leg and I think that’s a big thing to starting well.”
The Highlanders (16-3) were fueled by 17 and 14 points, respectively, from Courtney Wilson and Faith Russell.

The Highlanders led by five, before Unicoi closed the second quarter on a 10-0 run to lead 24-19 at intermission.
Cloudland (6-10) never regrouped.
“We tried to battle,” Cloudland coach Gary Harrison said. “Early in the game we played pretty good defensively, but we didn’t do a good job rebounding early in the first half. We had an opportunity to be up we felt like at halftime, but we were getting beat at tha half 12-6 on the boards.
