Lady ‘Landers remain thorn in Volunteer’s side

By

CHURCH HILL — Even with a career-high outing from its standout junior forward, Volunteer’s girls team had no answer for the Cloudland three.

Reeling off a combined 11 treys, the eighth-ranked Lady Highlanders outlasted Savannah Felgemacher’s 31-point night and beat the Lady Falcons 61-48 in their third meeting of the season.

Courtney Clarke tallied 16 points and Kendall Mull added 14 — each tallying four triples — to pace a strong road victory for the ladies from Roan Mountain.

“We knew it was going to be tough down here playing them for a third time,” said Cloudland coach Matt Birchfield. “They’re a good ball club and have got two terrific players. The kids played well and responded well on the road. They had a good attitude and we shot the ball from the perimeter better than we have the last few games. I’m real happy with that out of several kids.”
