Coach Todd Whittemore’s Lady Longhorns were close to getting that signature win, but instead had another fall like Humpty Dumpty. Poor free-throw shooting and foul trouble cost Johnson County dearly in a 50-46 loss to Three Rivers Conference co-leader Sullivan South Monday night inside of Ray Shoun Gymnasium.
The Lady Rebels (4-0, 8-2) scored only four field goals in the second half and didn’t convert on any during the fourth quarter. They shot 20 free throws in the second half, converting 12. Their final nine points in the fourth quarter came from the charity stripe.
“We’re not going to win every game but we can play with a winning attitude,” said Whittemore. “We want these kids to realize that for two hours these people are putting everything aside to come out and root for them. I’m proud of these kids for the effort they came out and played with. Say what you want to but we missed two layups in the last minute, two free throws and nine total for the game. We lose by four and still have a chance to win. Those are fixable things.”
