Happy Valley’s version of “Bayless” basketball paid off at the end against upset-minded Johnson County. The Lady Warriors won a hard-fought 47-36 Three Rivers Conference contest inside of Ray Shoun Gymnasium that was much closer than the final score indicated.
The Lady Longhorns trailed 37-36 with 4:30 remaining but didn’t score after that. Happy Valley put it in the “deep freeze” with 4:01 remaining after taking a 40-36 lead and forcing a turnover on the inbounds play. Coach Larry Abel’s squad ran off exactly three minutes before finally going to the foul line.
“We gave up six quick points to end the third quarter,” said Abel. “I thought we were tight to start the fourth and weren’t attacking or getting good looks. We decided to take a page out of Coach Bayless’ playbook and pull it out. We took care of the ball and made free throws at the end when it counted.”
