Lawsuit aims to protect red wolves in coyote hunt

By

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Wildlife and environmental groups say they’re looking to protect endangered red wolves by going to court.

Groups represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center will ask a judge Tuesday to block a new North Carolina rule that took effect in August allowing coyotes to be hunted at night with spotlights.

People who want the rule blocked say coyotes and red wolves look so similar they’re hard to tell apart even in daylight. Four of red wolves have been found shot to death since the rule took effect.

About 100 red wolves live wild in a five-county region in northeast North Carolina, where scientists are trying to restore one of the two wolf breeds native to North America.
