JOHNSON CITY— Not even a thief in the night could have stolen a victory like Cookeville did in the opening round of the 13-year old Babe Ruth state tournament held at Seaver Field on Friday. The Putman County boys scored four times in the sixth inning to knock off Elizabethton 8-7 after trailing for most of the game.
It was heartbreaking loss for ’Betsy, who scored five times in the fourth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit. The game started at noon, which allowed the heat and humidity to play a key role in the outcome.
Crafty southpaw Wyatt Lyons was cruising on the mound through five, but began to tire. His absence on the hill was a key turning point, according to Elizabethton manager Rick Walters.
