Any seaside vacation can create lasting memories, but for Bernice Hartley it was enough to bring tears to her eyes — especially when she first saw the sun rising above the ocean.

Bernice Hartley’s September included th 81-year-old resident of Pine Ridge Health Care & Rehabilitation Center’s first vacation, first travel any distance from Elizabethton and her first visit to the beach.

The 81-year-old resident of Pine Ridge Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in Elizabethton had never seen the ocean in person until she went on her first vacation to Myrtle Beach, S.C., in September.

That journey of firsts was not only Hartley’s first vacation; it included her first stay in a motel and her first venture of any distance away from Elizabethton.

“I loved it. It was just wonderful,” said Hartley as a smile covered her face. “I didn’t want to come back. I wanted to stay. Only the Lord God could have made something so beautiful.”
