This buffalo had wings — or so it seemed.

Little Milligan Elementary School Principal J.R. Campbell on Tuesday afternoon welcomed Marshall, the buffalo, back to dry land after being discovered on an island in Watauga Lake. Marshall has been missing from his familiar spot at the school for about three months.
But after roaming who knows where, Marshall is back where he’s supposed to be — Little Milligan Elementary School.
The nearly 500-pound school mascot’s short summer vacation ended this past weekend when he was spotted at Watauga Lake and returned safely Tuesday to the delight of the school’s students and staff.
The school’s sturdy concrete mascot had spent at least part of the summer on a deserted island in the middle of the lake. Who took Marshall there and, indeed, how he got there is a mystery.
