Johnson County’s quest to hit a game winning shot in the final seconds proved to be like trying to knock down milk bottles with a baseball at the carnival.
The Longhorns came close but couldn’t get the last one to fall. Two shots in the last six seconds, including a five-footer that rimmed out, allowed Sullivan South to escape Ray Shoun Gymnasium with a 53-52 Three Rivers Conference win on Monday night.
Evan Headrick hit a pair of free throws with 37 seconds showing to put South up by the final margin. Chase Phillips had surged the ’Horns ahead by going 4-for-4 from the line prior to that.
