Fans of old-school, smash-mouth football got their money’s worth in Mountain City.
The Johnson County Longhorns outscored Unicoi County 14-0 in the second half behind two scores from tailback Jordan Grubb to nab a 17-7 win in Three Rivers Conference action at Paul H. McEwen Stadium Friday night.
Grubb (12 carries, 93 yards) was the key back in the fourth quarter with scores from 5 and 8 yards out to help hold off a rally from Johnson County’s conference rival.
“I’m feeling pretty good, but I have to give it to my line,” Grubb said. “They did an amazing job. My fullback and slot back, they really put me in the position to make the plays. We came out flat in the first half but we went into the locker room, got pumped up and brought it in the second half.”
Johnson County (3-4, TRC 1-2) moved to fifth place in the conference with the victory, but was tested early on — trailing Unicoi County (2-5, TRC 1-3) at halftime, 7-3.
