Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece said Richard Shane Mabe, the man wanted by his department in connection with a double shooting on Monday, shot at cruisers as he led sheriff’s department and Mountain City police officers on a chase.
Reece said Mabe vowed not to be taken alive by officers, but he was captured near noon Wednesday with only an injury to his arm.
The sheriff said Mabe was sighted at approximately 11:45 a.m. in a Saturn sedan in a McDonald’s drive through with a passenger in his vehicle.
As Mountain City and sheriff’s department officers approached, he sped away, Reece said.
Reece said Mabe and his passenger, identified as Timothy Lee Greer, had a sawed-off shotgun and a 9 mm handgun in their vehicle and said Mabe fired several shots at the pursuing officers, striking a Mountain City patrol car.
During the chase, Reece said the men pulled into a Marathon gas station and carjacked another vehicle that was waiting at the pumps, but were rammed and wrecked by officers shortly after taking off again.
In addition to the two counts of attempted murder for the incident Monday, Reece said Mabe will additionally be charged with several counts of assault on an officer with a dangerous weapon.
