More local veterinarians enter agreement for low-cost spay/neuter surgery for shelter pets

The Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter has expanded its partnership with local veterinary clinics to provide low-cost spay and neuter surgeries for pets adopted from the shelter.

Shelter Director April Jones informed the ECCAS advisory board that six new veterinary clinics had agreed to participate in the low-cost agreement between the shelter, the Carter County Humane Society and local veterinarians. Through the agreement, families adopting a pet pay $35 for the spay or neuter at the time of adoption. These funds are transferred to the CCHS, which pays the veterinarian for the surgeries.

The CCHS has had a long-standing agreement with Robinson Animal Hospital in downtown Johnson City to provide the surgeries for pets adopted from the Elizabethton animal shelter. The clinic offers the surgeries at a reduced cost of $60. The CCHS pays the difference between the vet’s cost and what the family pays at the time of adoption.
