Morrell sisters win state wrestling titles for Happy Valley

FRANKLIN — Two golds and a pair of silvers. What a weekend it was on the mats for the Lady Warriors of Happy Valley.

Walking away with state championships were sisters Courtney and Jordan Morrell, who prevailed in the 125 and 112-pound divisions, respectively. Earning runner-up honors for HV were Elisa Bird (105) and Amanda Hennessee (130).

Also, Elizabethton’s Seth Malone achieved a sixth-place medal in Class A-AA boys.

Courtney Morrell, a freshman, decisioned Elise Dille (Cumberland County) 7-4 in Saturday’s finals and was named outstanding wrestler for the tournament. As for Jordan Morrell, a victory over Pigeon Forge’s Natalia Lysczarczyk (pinfall, 5:00) represented her second state crown.

Bird fell by pinfall vs. Rossview’s Abby Hawk (4:48) while Hennessee was pinned in 2:26 by Science Hill’s Lexi Knowles.

Beaten by Robert Owens of East Ridge (fall, 2:03) in the consolation bracket Saturday, Malone then dropped a close decision (4-2) to Hixson’s Spencer Groves for fifth place.
