Mountain-area residents begin shoveling out

The day after the first winter weather of the season, residents in the lower elevations were left wondering where the snow had gone, while those in the mountains started the task of clearing out from inches of snow that had fallen.

the area to work on a project at Hampton Creek Cove Natural Area. When snowy weather sidetracked that project, Spencer and other volunteers pitched in to help out at the park.
The winter weather system brought a wide range of precipitation to the region starting Sunday night and lasting through Wednesday morning. The highest elevations of Roan Mountain had three to four inches of snow by Monday morning and an average of 17 inches of snow by Tuesday. The lower elevations saw mostly rain and did not have any accumulations after the storm had passed.
The snowy weather covered the roads in the highest elevations, but the Carter County Highway Department worked diligently through the day to make sure the roads were cleared of snow by Wednesday.
