WASHINGTON (AP) -- Billed as a way for the government to put more fuel-efficient vehicles on highways, the $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program sold thousands of commuter-friendly cars, even hybrids, and more: Turns out, the most common deals replaced old Ford or Chevrolet pickups with new ones that got only marginally better gas mileage, according to an analysis of new federal data by The Associated Press.


 

The legislation, recognizing the lingering distresses of the recession, passed the Senate Wednesday on a 98-0 vote and could come up in the House as early as today, sending it to President Barack Obama for his signature.
