Correction In Sunday's article on fish habitat construction, it was incorrectly stated that Tennessee House Speaker Kent Williams has been instrumental in the stocking of more than 3,000 crappie in Watauga Lake in recent years. According to a TWRA official, approximately 200,000 crappie have been stocked in Watauga Lake since 2007. The STAR regrets the error. |

Construction will finally Engineer Gary Tysinger of Tysinger, Hampton & Partners said the 500-foot deep test well is ready to be drilled, and all components of the test well will be incorporated into the permanent project. Tysinger said after the well is drilled, a drawdown test will be done, followed by water analysis. He said that hydrogeologist Robert Benfield will be working closely with Casey Well Drilling on the well site. The well will cost about $87,700. Drilling of a previous test well was halted due to insufficient equipment. |

CCIL reports successful fundraising dinner
The Carter County Imagination Library Committee reported a profit of $3,711.58 after expenses for the fourth annual Educators Hall of Fame fundraising dinner.
Police investigate fire
About 3:55 a.m., firefighters and deputies responded to a fire call at 972 Dry Creek Road. Deputy Tim Garland spoke to a witness, identified as Joan Ramsey. She told the officer her dog began to bark and she heard a crackling sound outside. She looked outside and saw the church's fellowship hall was on fire. Ramsey then called 911.
ACS marks 34th Great American Smokeout urging smokers to quit
As the official sponsor of birthdays, the American Cancer Society marks the 34th Great American Smokeout on Thursday, Nov. 19, by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.

Jonesborough man arrested
Carter County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a business at 228 First Avenue in Hampton about 10:30 a.m. Monday. An employee, Jesse Willis, told Sgt. Brian Durham that someone had broken into the store and stolen numerous items.
Missing horse comes home
A Tennessee Walking Horse reported stolen last week from a Keenburg Road farm has come home.
Commission votes to send sign
The commission had to re-vote on the proposed changes to the sign ordinance after council denied the first reading of the new ordinance on a 3-2 vote because members did not believe the changes came with the formal recommendation of the planning commission.

City schools to provide
The city schools along with Mountain States Health Alliance, the Northeast Regional Health Office, the Carter County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control are working to arrange for a vaccination clinic for the students and faculty. Both forms of the vaccine -- the shot and the nasal mist -- will be available.
