    Jerry D. Evans

    Jerry Dale Evans, 62, 5204 Highway 321, Butler, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2008, at Johnson City Medical Center.

    Jerry was a native of Johnson County and a 1964 graduate of Hampton High School. He was retired due to disability as an over the road truck driver with Superior Truck Lines, Kingsport. He was also a farmer.

    Jerry was a member of the Meadowview Baptist Church. He also served in the United States Army.

    He was preceded in death by his father, J.D. Evans.

    Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Marty Davenport Evans; his mother, Gladys Irene Walsh Evans, Butler; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Gail Evans, Gary Mark and Layna Evans, all of Butler, and Kyle and Lisa Evans, Bristol, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Gary "Pete" Evans; and several aunts and uncles.

    A memorial service for Mr. Evans will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Jones and the Rev. Cecil "Nick" Bradshaw officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be his special friends: Dave Hatley, Ross Clawson, Eric Wagner, Jessie Cable and Dennis Green. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence or the residence of his mother.     Charlie Glenn Roberson, 89, of Roan Mountain, passed away Monday, December 1, 2008, at his residence.

    Rev. Edgar J. Coleman Jr., 85, 602 N. Pine Street, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, welcome home my child, Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Edgar Coleman Sr. and Flora Pierce Coleman.

    Rev. Coleman was the oldest member of Charity Hill Free Will Baptist Church and was a retired Free Will Baptist Minister. He attended Free Will Baptist Bible College in Nashville in 1949.

    Rev. Coleman was a carpenter and worked for Snap-on Tools until his retirement in 1992. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and camping.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Bell Davenport Coleman; his brother, T.A. Coleman; and his sister, Aliene McDonald.

    Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kay and Gary Thomas and Diane and Andrew Shell, all of Elizabethton, and Blossom Coleman, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Eddie Coleman, of the home, and Frankie and Devonna Coleman, Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Chris Roberson and wife Brenda, Becky Street, Andrea Shell and fiancé Scott Younger, and Nick Shell; two great-grandchildren, Cricket Roberson and Jacob Street; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Bobby and Phyllis Davenport, Elizabethton, and Glen and Tina Davenport, Erwin; and a sister-in-law, Mary Coleman. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    The funeral service for Rev. Coleman will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, December 4, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Elmer Carter, Rev. Jerry Emert and Rev. Carl Grindstaff officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the residence, 602 N.     J.L. Winters

    J.L. Winters, 72, 107 Hatfield Drive, Elizabethton, crossed over on Monday, December 1, 2008, at Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.

    A native of the Shell Creek Community of Carter County, he was the son of the late Roy and Mae Hoss Winters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Winters Braswell and Barbara Winters Freeman.

    Mr. Winters was a member and deacon of Valley Forge Christian Church and a former Sunday School Superintendent. He was the owner and operator of J's Market in Elk Park, N.C., from 1971 until he retired in 2005. He was previously employed at Tri-State Container and was a charter member of the Elk Park Volunteer Fire Department.

    Mr. Winters is survived by his wife, Frieda Hayes Winters, of the home, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage in October; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Julie Winters and Timmy and Crystal Winters, Elk Park, N.C.; five grandchildren, Tiffany Shell and her husband Mark, Jason Winters, Shelley Lanthorn and her husband Lee, Stephanie Winters and Alice Winters; and a great-granddaughter, Makinna Shell.

    The funeral service for Mr. Winters will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, at the Valley Forge Christian Church with Mr. David Siebenaler, minister, and Mr. H.     Charlie H. Whitehead, 95, Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Roan Mountain, passed away Monday, December 1, 2008.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Larkin L. and Nannie Largent Whitehead.

    Mr. Whitehead was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of the Little Mountain Baptist Church and the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert, Joe, Grant, Ed and Lawrence Whitehead; a half brother, Earl Whitehead; a sister, Emma Whitehead; and three half sisters, Vicie Barnett, Sudie Hill and Gertrude Birchfield.

    Survivors include his wife, Sarah Guinn Whitehead; a son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Louise Whitehead, Roan Mountain; two daughters and a son-in-law, Della Sue Whitehead, Elizabethton, and Loretta and Jimmy McKinney, Roan Mountain; grandsons, Michael McKinney and wife Raquel, Piney Flats, Mark McKinney and wife April, Knoxville, and Chris Whitehead and wife Shannon, Roan Mountain; great-grandsons, Hunter Scott McKinney and Christopher Blake Whitehead; two great-granddaughters, Rachel McKinney and Lilly Kate McKinney; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Christine Malone; and his special friends, Hurley Davis, Eddie Julian, Becky Lewis and Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Brown.

    Darnel M. Baird

    "I held your hand in marriage. I held your hand in death. I have held you in my heart forever."

    Darnel M. Baird, 88, 603 Barker Street, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late William M. and Nora McCloud Baird.

    Mr. Baird was a member of Centerview Church of Christ and retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 35 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He made 20 crossings of the Atlantic Ocean to transport soldiers to battle and bring home the wounded. He also worked in a CCC camp for two years.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Jean Baird; four brothers, Luther, Clyde, Sterling and J.M. Baird; and four sisters, Cordelia Cable, Rose Potter, Hattie Miller and Vicie Hopkins.

    Mr. Baird is survived by his wife of 62 years, Amy Irick Baird, of the home, several nieces and nephews and many good neighbors.

    The funeral service for Mr. Baird will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, December 4, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. David Irick, minister, officiating.     Raymond Floyd Carden, 73, 1310 Hillside Drive, Elizabethton, passed away Monday, December 1, 2008, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late George B. and Veona Nave Carden.

    Mr. Carden was a retired Press Operator of Inland Container and a member of Siam Baptist Church. His hobby was his horses.

    Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Scott and Marlo Carden, Elizabethton, and Eric Daniel Carden, of the home; a grandson, Blake Duvall, with the U.S. Navy stationed in San Diego, Calif.; his former wife, Joan Ramsey, Elizabethton; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Don Carden, Howard Carden and Ernie and Etta Carden, all of Elizabethton; and four sisters and a brother-in-law, Jan and Larry Holt, Johnson City, Shirley Turner and Wilma Jean Sanders, both of Edwardsburg, Mich., and Joyce Lynn Taylor, Lenoir, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Roy Allen Dugger, 62, 1338 Poga Road, Butler, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2008, at Select Specialty Hospital, Bristol, Tenn.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late William Abraham and Missouri J. Hicks Dugger.

    Mr. Dugger was a retired factory worker. He was a member of Stone Mountain Baptist Church.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mathis Roe Dugger and William Bill Hicks.

    Survivors include his wife, Selma Potter Dugger; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Kathleen Guy, Fort Worth, Texas, and Jeff and Michelle Guy, Butler; two grandsons, Ethan Guy and Chad Guy, both of Butler; three brothers, Allison Dugger and Dewey Dugger, both of Gray, and Charlie Dugger, Elizabethton; and two sisters, Wanda Guy, Butler, and Gail Harmon, Marion, N.C. Seven nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral services for Mr. Dugger will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, at Stone Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Estep officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir. Interment will follow in the Stone Mountain Cemetery.     Wilma P. Birkner

    Mrs. Wilma P. Birkner, 92, 245 Smalling Road, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, November 30, 2008, at her residence following a brief illness.

    Mrs. Birkner was the daughter of the late Jacob and Nellie VanBeveren Ternigan and was a native of Passaic, N.J. She had lived in Elizabethton since 1945. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Rev. Mike Birkner, in 1984; a daughter, Peggy Birkner, in 1973; a grandson, David Birkner Jr., in 2000; and a brother, Francis Ternigan, in 2000.

    Mrs. Birkner was an active member and former pianist of Grace Baptist Church in Elizabethton. She was affiliated with Children's Bible Ministries and Camp Ta-Pa-Win-Go for 63 years, was a Bible teacher with the Elizabethton Girls' Club and a former substitute teacher at Happy Valley High School.

    Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lynne and Jack Hamilton, Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Alyce Birkner and David and Carol Birkner, Elizabethton; a sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Edward Donatelli, Stuart, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Catherine Ternigan, Allentown, Pa.; six grandchildren, Danny Birkner Jr. and his wife Becky, Elizabethton, Carol White and her husband Brian, Hampton, Jan Padgett, Knoxville, Jill Birkner Mekouar, Elizabethton, Dr. John Hamilton and his wife Michelle, Greeneville, and Mark Hamilton and his wife Jennifer, Johnson City; and 10 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Ryan and Joshua Hamilton, Greeneville, Bella Hamilton, Johnson City, Michael, Kimberly and Jennifer Birkner, Elizabethton, Jon Christian White, Hampton, and Kelsy and Laurel Padgett, Knoxville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Allen G. Campbell

    Allen G. Campbell, 61, of Hampton, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

    A native of Elyria, Ohio, he was a son of Lillian Gerhart Campbell and the late George Campbell.

    Mr. Campbell was an avid sports fan and especially loved football. He was of the Catholic faith.

    Mr. Campbell graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a degree in education. He was retired from the Department of Corrections as the recreation coordinator.

    Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of 39 years, Pat Campbell, of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Ryan and Lori Campbell, Telford, and Ross Campbell, Hampton; a sister, Judy Crigger, LaGrange, Ohio; and special friend, Alma Mathes, Elizabethton.

    Maxine E. Puckett

    Maxine Ellen "Granny" Puckett, 84, 340 Lovers Lane, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, November 29, 2008.

    A native of Avery County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Elijah and Rose Moody Puckett.

    Mrs. Puckett had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Free Will Baptist Church, Hampton.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, T.J. Puckett, and several brothers and sisters.

    Survivors include three daughters, Wilma Jean Scalf, Betty Clara Cain and fiancé Michael Sargent, all of Elizabethton, and April Reene Barnett and husband Scott, Bluff City; five sons, Earl "Waits" Puckett, of the home, Paul Wayne Puckett and Sally, Salisbury, N.C., Roger D. Tolley and wife Mary R., Doyle Lee Puckett and wife Cindy and Howard T. Puckett and fiancé Jackie, all of Watauga; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Geneva Shell, Elk Park, N.C.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Puckett will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Danny Osborne officiating. Entombment services will be conducted at noon Wednesday, December 3, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, will be Alvin J. Carroll R. Blevins

    Carroll Reece Blevins, 76, Elizabethton, went to be with his Lord on Nov. 28, 2008, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late James and Sallie Massengill Blevins. He was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers. Mr. Blevins was retired from General Shale.

    He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

    Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Hayes Blevins of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Jeff Williams, Elizabethton; a very special granddaughter, Jessica Blevins, Johnson City; two brothers and their wives, Arthur and Helen Blevins and James and Janet Blevins, Elizabethton; brothers-in-law, J.D. Carr, New Ellenton, S.C.; Glenn and Patsy Hayes, Elizabethton; sisters-in-law; Billie Jean and Charles Powell, Evelyn Blevins and Jewel Blevins, Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews.

Brenda K. Hughes

    Brenda Kay Hughes, age 49, 226A South Hills Dr., Elizabethton, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. She was a native of Banner Elk, N.C., and a daughter of the late Bobby Gene and Alphalee Hoilman Hughes. Mrs. Hughes was of the Free Will Baptist faith and was a homemaker.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Donna Faye Hughes.

    Survivors include her son, Michael Shane Hamby and his girlfriend, Natasha Teaster, Elizabethton; one daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Christopher Sheets; two grandsons, Uriah Sheets, Justin Sheets, all of Roan Mountain, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Vanessa and Terry Hughes, Roan Mountain; Lahoma and Tom McNutt, Kingsport; two brothers and one sister-in-law, B.J. and Kim Hughes, Roan Mountain, and Benji Hughes, Newland, N.C.; former husband, Michael Hamby, Roan Mountain; and special friend, Holly Deloach, Hampton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Robert W. Coles

    Robert Wendell Coles, 77, Ivy Hall Nursing Home, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday Nov. 27, 2008. A native of Claremont, N.H., he was a son of the late John F. and Dora Proulx Coles. He had lived in Elizabethton for the past eight years. He was a retired factory worker. He served in the United States Army. Mr. Coles attended the Zion Baptist Church.

    Survivors include a daughter, Lynda J. Kelly, Kittrell, N.C.; two sons, Timothy Allen Coles, Christiansburg, Va., and Robert Coles, Elizabethton; six grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; several brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

Gay B. Gouge

    Gay Evelyn Bowers Gouge, 84, 799 Highway 91, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Elbert and Mary Ellen Grindstaff Bowers. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Gouge was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Gouge, April 2002, five sisters and two brothers.

    Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Mark Burmeister, Elizabethton, and Sandra and Donny Belcher, Greenville; a son, Freddie Gouge, Kingston; 3 grandchildren, Rhonda Hollifield, Thomas Gwyn and Travis Massey; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Linda W. Parkey

    Mrs. Linda Gail White Parkey, 63, 126 Hyder St., Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Clyde Harmon and Chelsie Mae Taylor White. Mrs. Parkey was a 1963 graduate of Unaka High School where she was named Miss Ranger of 1963. She had worked at Citizens Bank, Waste Management and was owner/operator of Quad City Cellular, a distributor of SunCom Cellular. Mrs. Parkey was a member of Moore's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and a member of the Republican Women's Club and the United Way.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Ella Mamaw White; a brother, Roy White; and a sister, Barbara White Moreland. Survivors include her husband, Don Parkey, of the home; two daughters, Melanie Oliver and her husband Joe, Elizabethton, and Laura Parkey, of the home; two grandchildren, Andrew Oliver and Megan Oliver, both of Elizabethton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Calvin Quesenberry, Elizabethton and Janice and Ron Oliver, Blountville; a brother and sister-in-law, Henry Clay and Betty White, Blountville; a brother-in-law, Ron Parkey, and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Ingram, both of Erwin.     Joyce Elaine Wood, 67, 133 Holston View Drive, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Tivis M. and Nellie Arnett Jones. She was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended Milligan College. She was a homemaker. She was a Free Will Baptist. She was preceded in death by a son, Todd McKinley Jones, in 1983.

    Survivors include her husband, Richard Wood; two daughters, Cindy Wood and Wendy Oliver, both of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Dustin Hill, Isiah Guinn, Carly Montoya and Gracey McKinney; a sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Ronnie Taylor, Elizabethton; a niece, Rohnda Taylor; and a nephew, Butch Taylor.

    Graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Blevins Cemetery (Stoney Creek) with the Rev. Billy Merritt officiating.     Johnny Lee Byers

    Johnny Lee Byers, 57, 134 Byers Road, Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following a brief illness.

    A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Sidney and Lassie Sheets Byers.

    Mr. Byers was a member of Keenburg Freewill Baptist Church and was retired from Elizabethton Herb and Metal.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Byers and Irene Byars.

    Mr. Byers is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Vestal, Nashville, Tenn.; two sons, Johnny Lee "J.J." Byers Jr., Knoxville, Tenn., and Sidney Byers, Elizabethton; eight grandchildren, Taylor Vestal, Cami Byers, Bailee Byers, Jay Byers, Brianna Byers, Ciera Byers, Dylan Byers and Haley Byers; four sisters, Nola Timbs, Hazel Buckles and Ruth Roark, all of Elizabethton, and Mandy Freemon, Piney Flats, Tenn.; and four brothers, Carl Byers, Ray Byers, Terry Byers and Jerry "Jiggs" Byers, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Rondal L. "Ron" Harrell

    Rondal Lynn "Ron" Harrell, 53, 120 Pine Bark Drive, Jonesborough, went home to be with his heavenly Father and to be reunited with his earthly father Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at Johnson City Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

    A native of Washington County, he was a son of Mildred Austin Harrell, Elizabethton, and the late Gene Harrell.

    Mr. Harrell was a member of Central Church of Christ and attended Grace Fellowship Church. He was a graduate of Happy Valley High School and was offered a football scholarship from Lees-McRae College. He chose to attend ETSU and Northeast State to further his education.

    Mr. Harrell was a district manager for Master America.

    In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a half brother, Chad McKeehan; his maternal grandparents, Goldman and Lois Austin; his paternal grandparents, Austin and Lee Harrell; and an uncle, Charles Austin.

    Survivors include his wife, Kathy Cundiff Harrell, of the home; one son, Andrew Harrell, and one daughter, Cara Harrell, both of Jonesborough; one step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Joshua and Jennifer Blue, Yorktown, Va.; one step-daughter, Kelly Blue, Johnson City; two step-grandchildren, Joshua Blue and Caden Blue; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Regina and Gary Tucker, Freeport, Fla., and Patti and Steve Townsend, Johnson City; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Gary and Becky Cundiff, Gray, and Alan and Karen Cundiff, Greensboro, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Mary Lee Cundiff, Roswell, Ga.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Mary Minton Cundiff, Johnson City; two special nieces, Amy Wandel and her husband Brandon, and Becky Townsend; one aunt, Patsy Mullis; six nieces; one nephew; one great-aunt; several cousins, and his little angel "Katie Bug."

    Ben E. McKinney

    Ben Edward McKinney, 72, of Elizabethton, went to meet his Lord and Master at his residence on Monday, November 17, 2008, following a courageous battle with cancer.

    A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Merritt and Cinda Hyder McKinney.

    Mr. McKinney was retired from Snap-on Tools in Elizabethton after 19 years of service. He worked at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for 14 years. He was a member of East Side Freewill Baptist Church where he was a former deacon, trustee and church van driver.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ethan McKinney and Hoover McKinney, and two sisters, Virginia Berry and Naomi McKinney.

    Survivors include his wife, Joann Stocton McKinney, with whom he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on December 24, 2008; a son, Christopher McKinney and his wife Catherine, Clearwater, Fla.; three sisters, Edith Sutton, Newport News, Va., Pauline Hoilman, Johnson City, and Ruth McKinney, Elizabethton; three sisters-in-law, Susie McKinney, Marlene McKinney and Betty Shook; and two brothers-in-law and their wives, Albert and Elizabeth Stocton and Eddie and Terry Stocton. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
