Saturday night’s Tri-City Thunder 2 main event certainly didn’t lack for controversy.
In the first sanctioned Muay Thai kickboxing bout in state history, judges declared a no contest at the East Tennessee Sports Complex. The 170-pound fight was called 19 seconds into the third and final round.
Johnson City’s Korey Popplewell had floored Ken Thompson of Nashville in the opening round. Thompson was fading in the second.
As the third had just begun, a Popplewell shot sent Thompson to the canvas — but not before Popplewell connected with a leg blast to the head. Thompson was down for the count, and that’s when the officials took over.
