Annie J. Proffitt, 92, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, December 2, 2013, at Johnson City Medical Center.
She was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Orlie Bowers Proffitt and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Belle McElyea, and her brother, Gilbert Proffitt.
Miss Proffitt was an avid reader, especially her Bible, and was a member of Siam Baptist Church. She had worked as a seamstress for Quick Cleaners.
Survivors include her three nieces, Linda Shouse and husband David Sr. of Elizabethton, Tenn., Ann Shipley and husband Frank of Maryville, Tenn., and Virginia Boles and husband Walter of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a nephew, Alvin Proffitt and wife Melinda of Clarksville, Tenn.; two great-nieces, Gena Byrd and husband Anthony of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Kristi Shipley of Maryville, Tenn.; two great-nephews, David Shouse Jr. and wife Stephani of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Chip Shipley and wife Stefanie of Louisville, Tenn.; and a special friend, Betty Young of Elizabethton, Tenn. Several extended family members also survive.
A celebration of Miss Proffitt’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Jack Roddy officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service. The graveside service and interment will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 5, in the Pierce Cemetery with Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating. Active pallbearers will be Devin Byrd, Anthony Byrd, Doug Bailey, Bob Wilson, David Bennett, Randy Singleton, Wendell Treadway and Johnny Proffitt. Honorary pallbearers will be Andy Wilson, Mike Moore, Lynn Treadway and members of Siam Baptist Church. Those wishing to attend the graveside service, on Thursday, are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Siam Baptist Church, 2414 Siam Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
