Carl Wayne Townsend, 68, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012, at Bristol Regional Hospital.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Carl E. and Jean D. Townsend.

Mr. Townsend attended Lees- McRae College on a football scholarship and also attended the University of Missouri. He served in the United States Navy for 16 years during the Vietnam Conflict.

Mr. Townsend was a retired Electronics Technician. He attended Immanuel Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty G. Townsend.

Survivors include a son, Anthony C. Townsend, Elizabethton; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Susan and Ric Heaton, Wake Forest, N.C., Carmen and John VanMeter, Elizabethton, Camanda and Jerry Irick, Elizabethton, and Linda VanMeter, Elizabethton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Donna Townsend, Elizabethton, Richard and Nancy Townsend, Coeburn, Va., and Sam and Ely Townsend, San Antonio, Zambales in the Philippines; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Jocelyn “Jo-Jo” Jarnigan, Brandon Combs, Ray Combs and Gina Floyd.

A memorial service for Mr. Townsend will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Tim Tapp assisted by Pastor Lance Bacon officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 9 a.m. Monday, October 8, in the National Cemetery, Mountain Home. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family will receive friends following the funeral service. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 8:15 a.m. Monday to go to the cemetery.
