Mr. Birchfield was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Joe and Ethel McKinney Birchfield. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Birchfield and Earl Birchfield; and one sister, Ella Mae Birchfield.
Mr. Birchfield was a member of the Upper Heaton Creek Free Will Baptist Church. He was a retired mechanic and liked to work on small engines.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Rosa Mae Chambers Birchfield, of the home; one daughter, Becky Lewis and husband, Tom, Roan Mountain; two sons, William E. Birchfield and wife, Sandra, Roan Mountain; Bobby Chambers, Vilas, N.C.; one brother, Bill Birchfield, Hampton; one sister, Beatrice Thompson, Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Richard Edward Birchfield and wife, Rebecca, Roan Mountain; and Brandy Mae Lewis, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Birchfield will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at Upper Heaton Creek Free Will Baptist Church in Roan Mountain. The Rev. Rick Birchfield and the Rev. Ronald Stevens will officiate. Music will be under the direction of Charlotte Smith. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service or at the residence of a son, William E. Birchfield, Roan Mountain.
Interment will follow the service at the Birchfield Family Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Carroll Street, friends and neighbors.
