David Hughes Jr., 76, Elizabethton, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, September 9, 2013, at his residence.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late David Hughes Sr. and Dealie Stephens Hughes.
Mr. Hughes retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service with the rank of Senior Master Sgt. His family traveled extensively throughout his career. He was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Hughes, and a sister, Sophina Ware.
A loving father and husband, his survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen Morrell Hughes; four daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Frank Burroughs, Johnson City, Jeanne and Jim Cavin, Elizabethton, Tina and Clarence Lyons, Hampton, and Lori and Dan Slater, Cedar Falls, Iowa; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Linda Hughes, Greenville, S.C.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Hughes, Hampton; and a sister, JoAnn Hathaway, Old Fort, N.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Private services for Mr. Hughes will be held at the graveside on Monday, September 16, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery for family and close friends. Military Honors will be provided by Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, S.C. Friends may visit with the family at the residence anytime.
