Mrs. Dorris Whaley, Elizabethton, entered her heavenly home on Friday, March 22, 2013, at her residence.
Mrs. Whaley was a daughter of the late Carter and Grace Smith.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Little Milligan Baptist Church, which she faithfully attended her entire life until her failing health did not permit her to do so.
Ms. Whaley was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter Whaley in 2002.
Other than her husband and parents, Ms. Whaley was preceded in death by brothers, J.D. Smith, Jack Smith; sisters Zola O’Neal and Vado Vaughn; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Whaley; brother-in-law, Jack Forbes; nieces, Carrie Lynn Ashley and Gracie Stone; and nephews, Herbert O’Neal and Ray Benny Vaughn.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Brenda Whaley of Elizabethton; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jack Hughes of Elizabethton; her sister, Mary Forbes, who she thought of as a daughter and who was her loving caregiver and cared for her until the end.
She is also survived by her special granddaughter, Tracie Shelton of Elizabethton, who she loved nothing more than to hear her sing; a step-granddaughter, Leslee Hughes of Nashville; her special sister-in-law, Frances Stewart; her special friend, Barbara Matheson; special nieces and nephews, Jackie and husband Michael Harris, Marsha Forbes of Elizabethton, John Forbes of Winchester, Ky., and Eugene O’Neal of Beckley, W.V.; great-nephew, Cody Forbes and his friend Courtney Deadrick, Cookeville, Tenn.; great-niece Emily Harris of Knoxville, Tenn.; and her little “daytime buddy,” Molly the schnauzer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2013, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Sammy Icenhour, the Rev. Ronnie Campbell and the Rev. Gary Edwards officiating.
Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, in Butler Memorial Cemetery. Music will be provided by Tracie Shelton.
Active pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday will be Michael Harris, Cody Forbes, John Forbes, Doug Hatley, Sam Harrison, Carl Harrison, Danny Kinser and Duane Forbes. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Campbell, Paul Campbell, Bobby White, Jeff Finney, Jerome Finney, Terry Stewart, Steve Smith, Arlie Vaughn, Cecil Honeycutt, J.R. Campbell and Bart Smith.
The family would like to express their thanks to the employees of Caris Hospice who so lovingly and gently cared for Dorris. These included Rhonda, Teresa, Tracy and Patty. Also, a special thanks to JoAnn Blankenship for her care, kindness and support.
Memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Whaley to the East Tennessee Christian Home, 517 Allen Avenue, Elizabethton, Tenn., 37643 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, Tenn., 38101-9908.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence.
Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday to go to the cemetery.
