He was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Frank and Emma Buckles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Buckles, Clay Buckles and Claude Buckles, and three sisters, Effie Danner, Pearl Buckles and Edith Buckles.
Mr. Buckles was retired from East Tennessee Chair Company and had served as a constable for the Carter County Sheriff’s Department.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen Bowers Buckles, of the home; three daughters, Teresa Chambers and husband Donnie, Hampton, Mary Sue Buckles, Elizabethton, and Jamie Simerly and husband Terry, Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Donna Ranshaw, Joshua Miller, Daniel Chambers, Terrina Gloss and Katie Simerly; one great-grandson, Seth Ranshaw; three brothers, Ivan Buckles and Jay Buckles, both of Elizabethton, and Paul Buckles, Kingsport; and three sisters, Margaret Garland of Michigan, Brenda Taylor, Johnson City, and Myrtle Pierce, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Buckles will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 6, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Richard Blevins and Rev. Willie Lunsford officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 until 2:30 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carter County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 682, Elizabethton, TN 37644, in honor of Mr. Buckles.
