Ella Mae Gibbs, 88, of Johnson City passed away Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at her daughter’s residence in Knoxville.
She was born in Canton, Ohio to the late L.D. and Bernice Julian Ollis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Gibbs; and one brother, Murrell Ollis.
Mrs. Gibbs was formerly a resident of Roan Mountain, where she met and married Howard Gibbs. She was an excellent gardener and extremely hard-working and devoted wife and mother.
She and her husband, Howard, attended Upper Heaton Creek Church. Upon leaving Roan Mountain in the 1970s, she began working at Kmart in Johnson City, until she retired due to health issues.
She was a very caring and loving person and will be missed.
Survivors include a son, Neil Gibbs and wife, Sue Ann, Piney Flats; a daughter, Zelma Roseland Proffitt and husband, Stephen, Oak Ridge; two grandchildren, Jennifer Ward and husband, Jack, of Florida, and Andrea Truan and husband,Jon, Oak Ridge; two step grandchildren, David Heath, Tacoma Park, Md., and Michael Barr and wife, Keren, Braselton, Ga.; one great granddaughter, Savannah Truan, Oak Ridge; two brothers, Warren G. Ollis, Pennsylvania and Gene Ollis, Asheville, N.C.; one sister, Gay Helms, Hartsville, S.C. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Gibbs will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain with the Rev. Randy English, officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Friday.
The graveside service will follow in the Gibbs Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Gibbs, Wayne Gibbs, Gary Harvey, Darin Harvey, Chris Ollis and Steve Godsey.
