George L. Carter, 85, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at Erwin Heath Care Center following an extended illness.
He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Frank L. and Lucy Estep Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty Lou Campbell Carter, and several brothers and sisters.
Mr. Carter was retired from North American Rayon Corporation and served as a Deacon at Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter.
Survivors include two daughters, Deana Hilbert, Elizabethton, and Barbara Prewitt, of the home; one grandson, Teddy Joe Morton Jr. and wife Adrianna; a sister, Nell Gagliano; and two great-grandchildren, Bret and Aurora Morton.
The funeral service for Mr. Carter will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, August 15, at Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Fleenor officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
