George Lawrence Meyer

By

George Lawrence Meyer passed away peacefully while sleeping on the night of his birthday, January 1, 2014.
This past year had been quite a journey for George — from his hospitalization in the beginning of 2013, to then relocating from Tennessee with his wife of 62 years to Assisted Living in Philadelphia at the age of 88. In the true spirit of George, he continued to find and share the joys of life with friends and family right up until his passing and was incredibly inspiring to all those around him.
A responsible and loving father, husband, and friend, he is survived by his wife, Frances Marie Meyer; daughter, Connie Byers and husband Ken Skinner; daughter, Pattie Meyer and husband Joe Meyer; granddaughter, Erin Byers Clarke and husband Cameron Clarke; brother, Richard Meyer; sister-in-law, Patti Drop; and sister-in-law, Louise Meyer.
George was a retired Firefighter (Captain), who loved his job, and was a Navy WWII Veteran Radioman Second Class during all the major battles in the South Pacific during the last two years of the war. He had a great sense of humor and infectious laugh, possessed common sense, and was down-to-earth, charitable, and intelligent. His interests ranged from History to the Stock Market, and he could often be seen and heard driving through town with his windows down to his favorite CD, k.d. lang’s “Shadowland.” Learn more about George and his legacy at http://memorialwebsites.legacy.com/georgelmeyer/homepage.aspx
George’s wishes were to have a mass at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Elizabethton, Tenn. (date to be announced) and to buy a coffee for all of his buddies he met up with every morning for years at McDonald’s. In lieu of flowers, he requested a donation to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
