Gray Max Carrier, age 93, Kingsport, formerly of Elizabethton, was called to be with his Lord and Savior, Friday, September 28, 2012, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Carter County on March 24, 1919, and lived most of his life there.He was the son of the late Joseph and Emma Williams Carrier.
Gray was the oldest member of Watauga Valley Freewill Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwen Widmyer; three sisters, Maxie Collins, Maude Wilson, and Pansy Vanier; and one brother, Walter Carrier.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 72 years, Norma Grindstaff Carrier; one daughter, Janice Hammond and husband, Bill; two grandsons, Brad Hammond and wife, Gloria, and Bart Hammond and wife, Julianne; two granddaughters, Amber Garland and husband, James, and Ginger Shifflett and husband, Paul; ten great-grandchildren and a son-in-law, Warren Widmyer. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral service for Gray Max Carrier will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2012. in Watauga Valley Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Greer, Rev. Elmer Carter and Dr. James Richardson officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church. The family will receive friends at the Church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday prior to the funeral service.
Interment will follow the funeral service in Wilson Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Roger Babb, Sherrill Carrier, Mac Collins, Wayne Dean, Larry Grindstaff, Dean Gentry, Keith Williams, Raymond Williams and Rick Collins. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Pierce, Nat Payne, Leonard Lewis, Earl Bishop, John Hardin, Larry Peters, Jimmy Peters, Sherrell Perry, Anthony Grindstaff, Keith Garland and James Carroll. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the loving staffs of Interin Healthcare, Home Instead and Caris Healthcare for their care to Mr. Carrier during his lengthy time of need.
