Mrs. Helen S. Finney, age 83, of 109 Tilson Avenue, Hampton, Tennessee, died January 17, 2014, at Hermitage Health Center.
She was a native of Carter County and the daughter of James Monroe and Nellie Rowe Stevens.
Mrs. Finney was a retired teacher having taught mathematics and English at Hampton High School for 40 years. She was an honor graduate of Hampton High School and of East Tennessee State University, receiving her B.S. Degree in 1953, and her M.A. Degree in 1967.
She was one of the first teachers in Tennessee to be named as a Career Ladder III Teacher in 1985. She was Carter County’s Secondary Teacher of the Year in 1992. She also served as president of the Retired Teachers Association. She was named as the first member of the Carter County Schools Educator Hall of Fame in 2006.
Mrs. Finney was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Robert “Bob” Finney, of the home; a son, Steve Finney of Johnson City; grandchildren, Lauren Grace Finney and Andrew Steven Finney of Johnson City; sister, Gale Phillips of Green Mountain, North Carolina; nephews, Keynan and Kent Phillips of North Carolina, and special friend, Gereel Cable, Hampton.
Several great nieces and nephews also survive.
The family requests the comfort and honor of your presence at the Celebration of the Life service for Mrs. Helen Finney Sunday, January 19, 2014, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton, with the Rev. Bruce Hendrich and Mr. Jerry Stout, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Carol Roberts and June Oaks. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Sunday. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m.
The graveside and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, January 20, 2014, in the Patton-Simmons Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mike McKinney, John L. McKinney, Eddie Orr, Junior Teglas, Tim Hicks and Gene Orefield. Honorary pallbearers will be those with whom she taught with at Hampton High School. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton at 10 a.m. Monday, to go in procession.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Staff of Hermitage Health Care Center for all the love and care extended to Mrs. Finney during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, give a donation to the Retired Teachers’ Scholarship Fund in memory of Mrs. Finney.
