James C. Tipton

James C. Tipton, 92, of Sugar Hollow Road, Roan Mountain, went home to be with his Lord and family on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at his residence.

He was born in Roan Mountain and was the son of the late James B. and Julia Miller Tipton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Jack, Charles, Lincoln and Herbert Tipton, and his sister, Frances Tipton Goins.

Mr. Tipton was a member of McGill Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roan Mountain. He enjoyed reading the Bible at church and attending family gatherings.

Mr. Tipton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Linda Kay Garland and Jerry Garland, Roan Mountain; two sisters, Genevieve Tipton, Roan Mountain, and Bonnie Montgomery, Elizabethton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ted and Betty Tipton, Hampton, and Johnny Tipton, Hampton; and a special friend, Edith Burkey. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call at their convenience on Wednesday, September 26, from 2 until 5 p.m. at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Thursday, September 27, at McGill Memorial Presbyterian Church, Roan Mountain. The funeral service for Mr. Tipton will follow beginning at 3 p.m. with Rev. Martin Christian and Thom Burleson, CLP, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Nancy Hartlaub, pianist, and the McGill Memorial Presbyterian Church Choir. Interment will follow in the Tipton Family Cemetery in Sugar Hollow with Military Honors conducted by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Tracy Tipton, Scott Tipton, Roger Tipton, Keith Tipton, Rodney Tipton, Todd Montgomery, Jerry Calhoun and Chad Allara. The family would like to express a special thank you to Mrs. Edith Burkey for the love and care of Mr. Tipton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to McGill Memorial Presbyterian Church, 296 Highway 143, Roan Mountain, TN 37687, in remembrance of Mr. Tipton.
