John Edward Russell, 66, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013, at Johnson City Medical Center.
John was born in Johnson City but lived his entire life in Carter County. He was a son of the late Robert Lee and Gladys Bowman Russell.
John was a 1965 graduate of Unaka High School. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Ruth Canter Russell; a daughter, Wendy Russell Trivette and her husband Kevin, Church Hill; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Melvin and Ellen Canter, Virginia and Reynold Harrison, Ethel Winters and Floyd Nave.
Funeral services for Mr. Russell will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Adam Williams officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir. Graveside services and interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, and also at the funeral home at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, will be Pat Smith, Gene Hubbard, Mark Baumann, Jim Forgey, Maurice Shell, Roger Shepard, Wayne Muncey and Ted Mynatt. Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin Trivette, Bobby Joe Winters, Roger Winters, Byrd Deadrick, Reynold Harrison, Melvin Canter, Harvey Canter and his church family. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to Dr. Robert Schubert, Dr. Kyle Colvette, Dr. Carlos Floresquera, Dr. Charles Famoyin, Dr. Anthony Palazzo and the doctors and staff of the Johnson City Medical Center ICU. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Baptist Church. Friends may also visit with the family at the home of their special friends, Maurice and Lois Shell, 700 Elm Street, Elizabethton. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion and the Tennessee National Guard. To those who prefer, memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Russell to Zion Baptist Church, 1982 Gap Creek Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
