Loretta “Rhett” Gouge, 82, 6421 Highway 19E, Roan Mountain, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Maxie Whitehead Gouge; her brothers, Wydner Gouge and Conway Gouge; a sister, Golda Julian; a nephew, Scott Stanley; a niece, Vickie; and a great-nephew, Jeffery Miller.
A native of Carter County, Loretta loved people and loved to work. Her last job was with WETB Radio in Johnson City. She also worked at Watson’s and was one of the oldest living employees of Montgomery Ward in Elizabethton. She had several jobs in the downtown area in her lifetime, working all the way up until she was 78 years old. She also was elected as delegate to the constitutional convention in 1977 and ran for the office of Register of Deeds. She was president of the Roan Mountain Citizens Club at one time.
Ms. Gouge was over the teen board at Watson’s and helped in many fashion shows and pageants in the area. Loretta never had a bad word to say about anyone and loved to offer some gift to each person she met. She always wanted to do something to help others. Loretta had been getting progressively sick for the last four years, and passed away due to an illness resulting from this.
She was a lifetime member of Magill Memorial Presbyterian Church and served as business manager at the Tiger Creek Chapel. She graduated from Cloudland High School and attended ETSU.
Survivors include her sister, Joann Stanley, Roan Mountain; her brother, John Gouge Jr. and his wife Bea, Lakewood, Colo.; a nephew, Rick Stanley and his wife Linda, Roan Mountain; and three nieces, Connie Jo Howell, Susan and Tammy.
Due to sickness in the family, there will be no receiving of friends. The graveside service for Ms. Gouge will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Thursday.
